More than anything , I want the site to look businesslike, functional, and slick. A site that looks modern and is easy to navigate and use. I want it to look like a big company's site. Trust symbols are paramount because we are a small company selling to much larger ones (I've attached a file with some of our biggest clients).
PCW Memory is an offshoot of our main site, http://www.pc-wholesale, that specializes in server memory (while listing more or less the same products, the focus of PC Wholesale is on networking memory and transceivers). So its important that PCW Memory focuses on Server Memory (the brands in the Manufacturers section - Dell, HP, IBM, etc). Quite a few designs have been borrowing too liberally from PC Wholesale (especially with regard to the trust/our customers elements). We want to have two distinct sites.
We want a site that communicates intelligence, creativity, trust and dependability. Our site should communicate these in some manner. Be creative!
Elements I want to keep:
The prominent search box/'memory configurator'Left hand navigation (with the slide out menus).
The rest of the site is up for change. We would like to see some more creative designs rather than ones that look just like PC Wholesale. WE WANT THE SITES TO LOOK GRAPHICALLY DISTINCT. So, though we like the PC Wholesale design, and you can use that somewhat as a guide, we don't want PCW Memory to look too similar.
Also, our product photos all suck, so if your design involves some kind of large hero image/slider (it absolutely DOES NOT have to) you'll have to look outside of our sites. Definitely being creative in terms of pictures is better. Abstract shapes, things related to computing, natural scenery are acceptable. Photographs of individual people are generally not recommended.
I want the site content areas to be a bit wider than they are on the current site. I do like the dark blue background but its not a necessity to keep it. Don't use orange as a dominant color your design and in general stay away from tons of contrast or super bright colors. Definitely check out Vology, CDW, and other similar sites. These sites look professional because they don't have super bright/high contrast colors.
I like the web convention right now is the header with the stretching edges, while all the content remains in the center. You can see that on PC Wholesale and some of our competitors and vendors (vology.com, cdw.com). I like what we did with PC Wholesale in having a footer a lot of the utility "sitemap" in there. It seems like that is a convention that's popular with a lot of bigger sites as well.
I'm happy to answer any questions.
