In the end, we need a master picture (see below) and then a way of using that same picture as an icon to highlight sections of text that will appeal to the audience described here.
We are developing a white paper on a technical topic around computing in healthcare insurance. Don't worry too much about the technology, that is almost beside the point for this exercise.
The back half of the document is roughly 8-10 pages that covers six topic area. We are looking to create a picture that we can place at the front of this section, that shows these six topics. Right now, we are using a simple wheel chart (see attached pdf sample page, called the Wheel) and we want to do something with a bit more elegant and novel (but not edgy or wild). We then have the same or similar graphic, in an smaller form, listed in the large white space to the left of each major section heading, but modified in such as way as the section under discussion is emphases (see attached, the wheel highlight, towards bottom left on the page).
You do not need to follow the wheel concept. Indeed, most people we have asked do not like the wheel, so something more exciting than a simple wheel would be good. But this does give you an idea where you can go with size.
Look to our style guide for information on colors and fonts and such. The document is in Calibri (text) and Tahoma (headers) so something from one of these font families would work well.
Final product is Adobe Illustrator Document *.ai and in pdf as well. 600 dpi desirable, though we will downres later, I suspect.
