A. Problem description:
We sell service cycle management software. Our target audience are
healthcare practice owners and their staff: doctors, nurses,
technicians, and front and back office personnel - they all rely on
this system to tell them what is the next task they need to do and
what is the total number of outstanding tasks for today.
Each patient requires one or more service cycles. Each patient service
cycle is defined by hundreds of tasks: patient education about her
condition, appointment scheduling, insurance benefit verification,
visit documentation, sales of medications and exercise equipment,
insurance claim preparation, submission, and payment reconciliation
and followup, scheduling of the follow up appointment, reminders, and
For example: a practice that sees 50 patients a day generates
thousands of such tasks and dozens of people need to keep processing
them continuously. It is very easy to loose track of any one item when
relying on your memory, and the downside is huge as in extreme cases,
a patient may die if given a wrong medication or not followed up on an
exam with bad diagnosis.
Six distinct functions serve every patient service cycle (top picture
