We would like to create a digital magazine that will serve as a platform for women to share their voices through written and visual content.
° We will need the designer to insert all the text (stories) and photographs into the magazine for this first issue (we will supply this).
° We need this to go live on September 15th.
Successful work can certainly lead to ongoing work with each successive issue.
The size will be standard letter size in vertical format: 8.5 by 11 inches (215.9 mm x 279.4 mm)
The link below is a preview of content and possible design ideas (very, very rough drafts and showing different ways to format the overall magazine, though we'd be very much up for starting a new design from scratch — I've included more ideas below the link):
This is just a mix of ideas. Small stories will be put in as well as feature stories.
My preferred layout would be like the one found here (after going to the link, scroll down for page spreads):
I'm thinking about doing something around 80-120 pages (depending on ads and story lengths). I'd like to make something that feels cohesive with our branding and move it away from looking like every other magazine.
Some more ideas about how to design/structure this:
° Create such a minimal design that it wouldn't take a ton of time to put together. So, take out all the graphics and other elements I've put in, etc. and let the photographers' work and writer's words speak for themselves. I'm hoping that eventually, that's what will happen anyway — that the work will be of such high-caliber that it will stand on its own two feet. For an example of a magazine I LOVE, see "Sidetracked Magazine" (this is how I first imagined our magazine would look, years before Sidetrack went to print — which their editor knows :).
° With the minimal design, we could use typography or graphic elements that tie it together that we can insert throughout and use in each successive issue — or leave it absolutely bare bones. (I like Victorian/Edwardian era icons/sketch-type graphics if you'd like to add some graphic elements.)
Our main font is Brandon Grotesque, though we don't have to stick with that for the magazine (maybe just the title?). Our brand colours are:
Dark Slate Gray: #2d2d2d
Definitely want to have pullout quotes!
