We will be opening in mid-April for our first season in this business. We are not the only greenhouse in the area; we hope to distinguish ourselves by carrying a wide range of heirloom vegetable and herb plants in addition to the usual spring flowers. We plan to grow the vegetables and herbs, and eventually the flowers too, using organic methods, though it is likely we'll never be certified organic.
At present, we are only planning to operate during the spring bedding plant season, roughly May 1 through the end of June, but in the future we may expand into fresh herbs and/or greenhouse-grown vegetables in winter or perhaps year-round. Plants will primarily be sold at the retail store on our property, but we may take them to local farmers' markets or other venues in the summer months.
We are located in southwest Michigan, an area studded with small lakes, many of which are lined with cottages. During the summer, there is a large influx of people from Chicago and other cities in the region who own these cottages, and we expect they will be our primary audience -- partly because we were until recently city people ourselves. But a number of local people have expressed interest too -- of course we'll hope to appeal to both markets.
We have had two different ideas for the shape of the logo: (1) a roundish graphic without words, which we could use alone or with the words Christianson's Greenhouse stacked the right of the logo, or (2) a graphic employing the letter C above and slightly to the left of the letter G, with growing things in or around the letters -- to which the remaining characters in the name could be appended or not. But we're not married to either of these ideas; if you have a better one, by all means let us see it. We tend to prefer spare and clean. Flowers are ok, but no hearts please.
The design does not have to use, but should not clash with, the “Barn Red” paint that is used for accents on various buildings around the place (sorry I can't be more specific about the color). Beyond that, we don't have color expectations. Our primary advertising venue will be local newspapers and newsletters, most of which don't print in color, so the logo needs to work in grayscale as well. We will also use the logo on the sign out front (http://christiansonsgreenhouse.com/logo/), as well as our business cards, website, etc.
Please do not use any clipart or stock images. The font you use should be available for licensing for business purposes at a reasonable cost. Finally, we would like to have the final artwork in .ai vector format.
