Glow is the Scottish National Intranet for schools, a collection of Web Services to support learning and teaching - within a safe and secure online environment.

So what's in Glow at the moment? Inside Glow there are loads of different components that can be used to enhance learning and teaching in the classroom and at home. You can also find a wealth of online digital resources that have been made available for the users of Glow.

There are opportunities to share and create resources, Glow encourages users to design and create their own content that can be shared amongst other users across the country. Glow also supports Scotland's new national curriculum, A Curriculum for Excellence. Inside Glow you can find interest groups that enable users share views, discuss practice and collaborate on projects with other practitioners.

As the current and original Glow contract comes to an end, the Glow Futures team are embarking on the challenging task of reprocuring Glow to allow the further development of Glow services. We are procuring next generation Web tools and we need a logo that will brand Glow Futures separately from the current incarnation of Glow.

It's very imporant that the Glow Futures logo is idenitifiable as an extension of the current Glow logo and colour palate. We want to see you take the current logo and develop it using some similar design elements. An eps file of the current logo is also attached for your use.

You should know that the brand name Glow, is not an acronym or short for anything.

These fictional personas are representative of key Glow Stakeholders:

Jane (7), is a pupil in a rural primary school in the Scottish Western Isles. During a class project about the poet, Robert Burns, she used Glow Meet to video conference with a school in Dundee. She enjoyed sharing her poem with another class of children hundreds of miles away.

Mr Reilly is a Georgraphy teacher in an Aberdeenshire Academy. He's been using Glow with his classes. He also tries to incorporate other web based tools into his lessons such as google earth, blogs and wikis.

Jackson Shields is the CEO of CleverClogs Learning Tablets. This sector understands the visual messages in technology Logos. He knows that Glow Futures has an internationally high profile in the Educational IT world where next generation web services are being developed to serve a diverse population of learners.

C.R. MacIntosh is an internationally recognised artist. Using his securely qualified guest account, he is collaborating with art students in schools across Scotland to develop their portfolios using Glow Groups.

Kaliq Seif is a parent in West Lothian. His daughter, Alia (16), uses Glow at school and at home to complete her homework and study. Kaliq logs into Glow to access reliable and up-to-date info about Alia's progress in class. Kaliq can also view timetables, homework and news targeted to parents by the school.

Glow Futures Stakeholders fall into 2 distictive groups. Our initial work will centre around identifying the requirements of those in the Demand Group, we'll then move on to inform and engage with those in the supply section to attempt to secure products and services that are important to our key users. Therefore the logo should appeal to both types of stakeholder, see below:

Service Providers
Educational Content Providers


- Clean, slick, simple, elegant, subtle edges -reflecting a highly effective user experience for all levels of user

- Identifiable to the Glow Palate (cut colour palate from pdf)

- Building on the 'futures' term by twisting the look and feel Glow branding

- Although Glow is for school learners, we don't want the logo to look too childish.

- Simple, fast, interactive, online, cutting edge, web 2.0

- We would also prefer something original. We advise against stock images.

- It needs to stand out

- It needs to work well out of both white and out of black backgrounds

- avoid any effects that suggest graphical elements or text are "glowing" so no haze or halo effects, or use of "fluorescent" versions of colours

We would like to see designers play with the rings/bubbles in the current Glow branding, incorporating them into the "glow futures" text. We prefer graphical elements to be in the heart of the brand mark design, not standing off to one side.

The URL for Glow Futures is - you MAY like to refer to this in your design, but NOT as a tagline, more to subtly incorporate the domain "dot" into the heart of the design. If you do decide to include this element, please do not design anything that draws attention to the "es" part of the URL or overly features the "dot", and so encourages a reader to see anything other than two words "glow futures". This is NOT a core requirement and is not essential.
