Skinny's Ballroom & Radio Station
Music venue in downtown Austin, TX. We are a bar too, so we have happy hour specials, plenty of seating, and a massive free digital jukebox. Not an actual ballroom. Capacity 150. The live music shows are "indie rock." We differentiate from the mainstream by selecting (curating) music that we like ourselves. Our roots go back to 70s punk and new wave (X, Pavement, Pixies, the Clash), and yes we are in our mid-40s, but we've kept up with new music. We tend to like music that's a little odd, NOT your typical Austin CIty Limits stuff. If you know Austin, our booking might be a cross between the Mohawk and the Continental Club. However, this is not a dive bar. We don't want the logo to be too macho or punk. Interior theme is vintage radios and radio show posters. We have an Internet radio station running from the bar during open hours. Whatever's playing on the free jukebox (1500+ records) or live onstage (if permission is given) will also be on the radio. So you could play off the radio theme. We tried a radio tower on our own attempts at the logo but were not satisfied with the results. I'll attach a copy. In this copy, I picked a retro font, vaguely art deco. It's PAG Bankas. My partner doesn't like this font, says it's too fancy. We're hovering the fence between typical gritty bar (and our grunge music background) and also wanting a comfortable, clean, nonintimidating happy hour bar.
several overlapping markets: (Main:) music nerd, generally mature but can be college-age. You're tired of the trendy dive bars and want to go somewhere that's way cool but also has clean bathrooms! You want to hear some music and you know whatever's playing at Skinny's will be good. You'll always find the best new or obscure bands, both local and touring. When bands aren't playing, you'll find interesting people to chat with, folks picking cool songs for free from the best jukebox in town. (2) Nearby downtown condo residents. (3) Nearby convention center guests and hotel guests. (4) Service industry worker before/after shift. (5) Anyone seeking a comfortable place to stop first for happy hour before going to the Sixth St or Red River bars, or making the last stop of the night.
Logo should preferably include the entire name (Skinny's Ballroom & Radio Station) but we should be able to cut off the extra text and just use the "Skinny's" portion on its own. Must be able to scale to a 1/8 page ad in the local entertainment weekly, so for this ad it must be legible at 2.2" wide, as a white logo against black background. For this reason it should be simple, graphic, & impactful, and b/w is prefered. But we could use a colorful or more detailed version on the web site if you want to go the extra mile & create two versions. Many bars include "Austin, TX" or "Austin, Texas" in the logo, but given the large amount of text already, that seems excessive. Adobe PhotoShop or Illustrator. I think Illustrator is preferred for the print ads. If we like your design, we will want you to come to Austin and hang with us!
