Description of our program: The Sasakawa USA Emerging Experts Delegation (SEED) Program is an educational program to nurture the next generation of U.S. policy experts to grow into a strong supporter of U.S.-Japan relations in their own field by improving their understanding of Japan and the regional and global role of the U.S.-Japan alliance. Every year, the program selects 7-8 up-and-coming U.S. policy experts without a core focus on Japan to participate. The program begins with a series of roundtables with U.S. experts on Japan in Washington, D.C. to prepare them for a trip to Japan. Participants will then visit Tokyo for approximately a week to meet with a number of Japanese representatives, policymakers and experts from the Diet, local and national governments, media, and think tanks to exchange opinions on a wide range of issues including security and foreign affairs, economics and trade, domestic politics and challenges, among others. The group also visits sits of significance to U.S.-Japan relations such as to U.S. Forces in Japan, as well as to other sites of cultural and historical significance. Following the trip, participants are expected to write and publish their findings and to utilize their knowledge of Japan and U.S.-Japan relations as they pursue their careers.
