The Australia Institute is the country’s most influential progressive think tank. Based in Canberra, it conducts research on a broad range of economic, social and environmental issues in order to inform public debate and bring greater accountability to the democratic process.

The aim of this infographic is to illustrate who benefits from the government housing policies of negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount.
The graphic should start with the title: ‘Negative gearing and capital gains discount cost $7.4B per year’. The text ‘$7.4B’ should stand out.
Underneath the heading should be a line ‘So who benefits?’
The next section should be represented as a graphic. The key points that need to be illustrated are are:
- The bottom half of income earners get 7%
- The top half of income earners get 93%
- The top 10% alone get 73%
I was thinking that you could illustrate the bottom 50% of income earners on one side of the page and the top half on the other. The bottom half of income earners will be poorer people while the top half will be richer. You then need to put the key figures that relate to each group over the top of them.
I would then put the text about the top 10% in the same area as the text on the top 50% instead of having them separate. This is because the top 10% is just a subset of the top 50%.
I have given one idea of how to represent this graphic but I am very happy and excited to see different ideas as well. The key thing is that the graphic illustrates the message that wealthy Australians receive the majority of the benefits.
Thanks, looking forward to seeing the graphics!
